Expo Milano 2015 celebrates the National Day of Uruguay

“Life grows in Uruguay”. This motto is behind the spirit of celebrations for the National Day at Expo Milano 2015 of this Latin American Country. August 25 is an important date and deeply felt because it coincides with the anniversary of the Country’s declaration of independence in 1825. For this reason, the participation of Uruguayan citizens living in Milan was warm-hearted: “Thanks to you and all our compatriots who make our small Country big during special occasions like this” said Liliam Kechichian, Minister of Tourism of Uruguay, during the flag-raising ceremony.

“It is the first time that our country is participating in a World Exposition - added the Minister Kechichian -. Our presence is both an opportunity and a privilege. This year's theme, ‘Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life’ seems tailored for Uruguay, a country in the forefront for key issues such as sustainability, traceability, the food and the renewable energy sectors”.

The identity of Uruguay as a country that merges tradition and technology characterises the entire Uruguayan project at Expo Milano 2015: the Pavilion has a spiral-shaped structure that aims at searching the balance between green and built-on spaces. “Uruguay is among the 25 greenest Countries in the world - said Bruno Antonio Pasquino, the Commissioner General of Expo Milano 2015, welcoming the Uruguay delegation -: not only does it offer a gastronomic experience of the highest level, but also environmental and sustainable habits of excellence, contributing to the reflection on the themes proposed by this World Exposition.”

After the flag-raising ceremony and the institutional speeches, the Uruguayan delegation paraded along the Decumano together with the visitors marching to the “candombe”, the original rhythm of the Afro-Uruguayan community played by “cuerdas de tambores”, the traditional percussions.

Minister Liliam Kechichian continued his visit to Expo Milano 2015, and signed the Charter of Milan in Palazzo Italia.

The celebrations were attended also by the Uruguayan singer Jorge Drexler, winner of the Academy Award for best original song with “Al otro lado del rio” written and performed for the film "The Motorcycle Diaries." And in the evening, a happy hour based on the typical Uruguayan food and cocktails at the Pavilion accompanied by traditional music.
