Introducing the Ballantine’s space glass

#Ballantine's, Europe’s No.1 Scotch whisky and the No.2 Scotch whisky in the world, has created a whisky #glass designed to work in a zero gravity environment for the next generation of whisky drinkers. Ballantine’s commissioned the Open #Space Agency, a collective of astropreneurs, to design the glass. Founded by James Parr, this group of space designers are ushering in a new era of space tourism and in designing the Space Glass they have solved a fundamental science and engineering challenge of drinking whisky in a zero gravity environment. The Space Glass was rigorously tested at the ZARM Zero-G Drop Tower in Bremen, Germany, to prove its functionality in conditions similar to that of space. To accompany the Space Glass, Ballantine’s Master Blender Sandy Hyslop has created an exclusive Special Batch of Ballantine’s Space Whisky. The blend has been crafted with a specific emphasis on enhancing the flavour profile of Ballantine’s to address the impact reduced gravity has on taste-buds when in space. Over the past 188 years, Ballantine’s has innovated the way whisky is made and sold, and in 2015 are innovating the way whisky is enjoyed by making a genuine contribution to the space program. By creating the Space Glass and exclusive Space Whisky, Ballantine’s has set out to ensure that the spirit of whisky lives on in the future. Sandy Hyslop, Ballantine's Master Blender believes the results have created something very special for the future of whisky drinkers. "The Ballantine’s Space Glass is built around the whisky drinking experience. The warming element from hand to glass is important to me because the whisky warms up while you are drinking it, unlocking aromas to ensure a multi-sensory experience. It's fantastic that this has been achieved, so Ballantine's inaugural space blend has a fitting vessel specifically built for zero gravity." "In space, you do not experience the sense of smell and taste with the same intensity as you do on earth. This meant I had to make the Ballantine’s Space Whisky more heightened in flavour and robust whilst maintaining the Ballantine’s signature style. Astronauts miss the taste of home so crafting a fruitier, stronger, more floral blend is a way they can keep the taste of home with them.” James Parr, from the Open Space Agency who led the design and build of the glass is convinced the glass heralds a new era of open-source space design and a landmark for the future of whisky. "Our brief was to develop a whisky glass that worked under the conditions of microgravity, the scientific term for zero gravity. It was important that what we focused on creating a ritual around how you drink from the Ballantine’s Space Glass creating a familiarity of what we are used to here on earth – the end result is one with several elements to that ritual, from the liquid entering the glass through to sipping from it.” “To do that, we are using inertia and the notion that the whisky will stay at rest while the bottle and the glass is moved around the resting liquid," Parr says. "Motion one pulls the whisky into the base of the glass, then motion two is to roll the whisky in your hand and let the heat transfer through the metal base into the liquid itself. By then moving the glass down prior to moving your nose into the space where the vapours are resting. The final motion is to move the glass upwards to capture the liquid in the base plate and let it enter your mouth." To celebrate the launch of the Ballantine’s Space Glass, we’ve created a future gazing film, directed by Thomas Hilland showing how we’ll take whisky with us. The film re-imagines the simple act and ritual of serving and drinking whisky, set in a microgravity bar on the Moon of Saturn Among the production team was celebrated Director of Photography, Ben Davis, known for Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Kick Ass. The film is narrated by Scottish actor James Cosmo known for appearances in Game of Thrones, Braveheart and Highlander. To showcase the science behind the project and to investigate our future in space, we have published an online Ballantine’s Space Glass Journal, charting the story of the project from start to finish. The Journal is home to interviews and information on the making of the Glass and the crafting of the exclusive Space Whisky. A two-part documentary showcasing the design of the Glass from concept to testing is also housed on the hub, making it a destination to gain an in-depth overview and insight into the development of this innovation. Other highlights on the Journal include contributions from NASA columnist Ethan Siegel, Shortlist Technology Editor Tom Bailey, Jamie Bamber (Captain Apollo in Battlestar Gallactica), artist Lucy McRae and design visionaries Studio Swine; as well as illustrations from Vice Magazine’s Gustavo Torres and celebrated Montreal based illustrator, Marie Bergon. Peter Moore, Ballantine’s Global Brand Director, commented: "We believe that when individuals stay true to themselves they leave their mark on this planet. As Ballantine’s drinkers have re-invented the world all around us, we’ve been right there with them so are delighted to be the first whisky brand to support astropreneurship with the development of the Ballantine’s Space Glass and the Special Batch of Ballantine’s Space Whisky. "Not only is the glass innovative – solving fundamental scientific questions of how liquid moves in zero gravity – but it is also beautifully designed, with the ritual of the whisky drinking experience at its heart.”
