The MICHELIN Guide makes its debut in Argentina

  • The City of Buenos Aires and Mendoza become the newest destinations spotlighted by the MICHELN Guide
  • Argentina becomes the first Hispanic Latin-American country to be scrutinized by the MICHELIN Guide’s inspectors
  • Inaugural restaurant selection for the City of Buenos Aires and Mendoza will be presented on November 24th, 2023

Michelin is pleased to announce the MICHELIN Guide’s arrival to Argentina. For the first time in the Guide's history, the MICHELIN Guide’s inspectors will scrutinize and recommend quality restaurants in this south American country. They will present their first restaurant selection for the City of Buenos Aires and Mendoza on November 24th, 2023.

By joining the MICHELIN Guide family, which already praises restaurants in more than 40 very different gourmet destinations, Argentina becomes today the first Hispanic Latin-American country highlighted by the MICHELIN Guide. A true recognition for its rich food culture, as well as an international celebration of its dynamic culinary scene.

“For some time now, our team of anonymous inspectors has been putting Buenos Aires and Mendoza on their radar and observing the evolution of their respective food scenes. Today, we are delighted to announce that we shall present our inaugural restaurant selection in November, marking the very first official steps for the MICHELIN Guide in Argentina”, commented Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guide. “Boasting a rich culinary heritage – which has been shaped by centuries of hectic history, and consecutive waves of migrations, creating a unique cultural melting pot – that country has an innate sense of hospitality, as well as a true taste for dining and going out. Buenos Aires and Mendoza are two gourmet destinations that fully deserve to be discovered and promoted. We can’t wait to present our first Argentinian restaurant selection, which our inspectors have already started to compile in the field, and to share with local food lovers and international visitors alike the culinary wonders we have found”.

The arrival of the MICHELIN Guide in Argentina is supported by the Argentinian Ministry of Tourism and Sports, whose Minister Mr. Matías Lammens said: “The arrival of the MICHELIN Guide in Argentina is a before and after for both our gastronomy and Argentine tourism. We are working together with the public and private sectors to make our country the leading gastronomic destination in Latin America and one of the most attractive in the world, and this announcement is proof of that. I have no doubt that this path we are taking together with the MICHELIN Guide will become a milestone that will last for many decades to come.”

The City of Buenos Aires is a dazzling metropolis - one of the largest in South America -, offering a wide range of architecture, culture and cuisine, which are all testimonies to its rich history. From fancy palace restaurants to casual bistros, Buenos Aires is a world-class destination which is supported by international and local foodies, always keen to try new concepts or go out for typical tragos.

Mendoza offers outstanding sceneries on the Cordillera de los Andes including breathtaking views on world renowned local vineyards. The wine culture has always been a defining feature of the region and has shaped picturesque hospitality and art de vivre, boasting friendly and very welcoming restaurants and world-known wineries.

The MICHELIN Guide Methodology

The MICHELIN Guide was created in 1900 by the Michelin tire company to support the growth of automobile mobility. Since then, it has remained loyal to its original mission: to settle in mature gastronomic destinations, to guide international travelers and local foodies to the best restaurants, to highlight world culinary scenes and to promote travel culture.

The restaurant selection of the MICHELIN Guide Buenos Aires and Mendoza will be independently made by the anonymous MICHELIN Guide Inspectors following the Guide's historical and global methodology.

Only the quality of the cuisine offered by the restaurants will be assessed by the inspectors according to the Guide’s 5 international criteria:

  • The quality of the produce.
  • The mastery of cooking techniques.
  • The harmony of flavors.
  • The personality of the chef represented in the cuisine.
  • The consistency both over time and across the entire menu.

The MICHELIN Guide Restaurant Selection

The MICHELIN Guide conveys its restaurant reviews through an extensive system of distinctions, which are awarded to special restaurants within its full selection. The most famous distinctions are its globally renowned MICHELIN Stars awarded to the restaurant offering the best culinary experiences. One MICHELIN Star is awarded to restaurants for “high-quality cooking that is worth a stop,” two MICHELIN Stars for “excellent cooking that is worth a detour,” and three MICHELIN Stars for “exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey.”

Alongside the coveted Star ratings, the selection also includes the popular Bib Gourmand category, a distinction awarded to restaurants that provide good quality food at a moderate price.

The full restaurant selection of the MICHELIN Guide Buenos Aires and Mendoza will be unveiled at a special event to be held in Buenos Aires on November 24th, 2023. It will be available exclusively in digital format on all the Guide's interfaces: website, mobile applications, and social networks. It will join the global MICHELIN Guide restaurant and hotel selections to be found for free on its digital platforms.
