2020 in Marche Region: selected by Lonely Planet as AS BEST IN TRAVEL art, nature, sport and good food

Marche Region welcomes 2020 with an exciting program of activities and initiatives to celebrate the prestigious nomination by Lonely Planet, the renowned travel guide that has selected this region as the world’s second “must travel to” destination of the year.

In the upcoming year, Le Marche will be a landmark for art, culture, sports and nature as well as for #food and wine. The celebrations in honor of the 500-year anniversary of the death of the leading artist Raphael Sanzio have already begun with the exhibition Raffaello Una mostra impossibile (Raphael An impossible exhibition) held in Falconara Airport ending on 2th February.

For all lovers of nature and sports Marche Region offers Marche Outdoor, a project supported by Vincenzo Nibali, international cycling champion, that promotes 24 cycling routes that will allow tourists to visit Le Marche in the most unique way.

Lastly, the Lauretano Jubilee that will lead pilgrims from all over the world to Loreto, to pay tribute to Our Lady of Loreto as universal patroness of aeronauts.

MARCHE BELLEZZA INFINITA is the claim that comes with the tourist promotion of Marche Region, along with the definition MARCHE IL PARADISO DEL BIKE, coined by the international cycling champion Vincenzo Nibali, new special ambassador of Marche Outdoor. This is a project of cycle tourism and of rebirth in the aftermath of the earthquake, a project that involved upgrading the backroads and creating a network to crisscross Le Marche region which stretches from the sea to the mountains and can be travelled by all kinds of cyclists from beginners to the most experienced athletes.

There are 24 cycle routes and the number is continually rising, and these link up the countless experiences scattered all over the region. They will breathe life into the concept “Marche Rebirth”, brainchild of the artist Michelangelo Pistoletto, which is perfectly in line with his philosophy of the Third Paradise and represents the cultural, economic and social “rebirth” through art of Le Marche. Literally an “open air museum” to be discovered through the itineraries suggested on www.marcheoutdoor.it and on the dedicated application.

2020 marks the 500th anniversary of the death of Raphael Sanzio, an artist who began his career in Le Marche, in particular in his home town of Urbino, a Unesco city, recently added by the New York Times to the tourist destinations for 2020. In Urbino is still possible to visit the house where Raphael was born and, a stone’s throw away, there is the Ducal Palace, that today houses the National Gallery of Le Marche which has in its collections one of the most enigmatic paintings of Raphael’s, the Portait of a young woman, also known as La Muta, with her lips perfectly sealed.

Also in Urbino, from June to October, in the Sale del Castellare of Palazzo Ducale, there will be the exhibition Raphael and Baldassarre Castiglione curated by Vittorio Sgarbi, Elisabetta Losetti e Pietro Di Natale, where the author of the Courtier will recount the culture of an extraordinary period.
In the town of Loreto, from 25th February to 19 th April 2020, in the renewed exhibition spaces of the Bastione Sangallo, it is presented to the public for the first time ever the Raphael cardboard tapestry

April to 5th July, the Museo Pontificio della Santa Casa will hold an exhibition entitled Raphael’s The “Madonna of the veil or Madonna of Loreto”. The adventures and success of a work of art, curated by Fabrizio Biferali and Vito Punzi, with the consultation of the Vatican Museum.

In Jesi (AN), at the Musei Civici di Palazzo Pianetti, an exhibition will take place from 6th June 2020 to 6th January 2021 entitled Raphael and Angelo Colocci. Beauty and science in the construction of the myth of ancient Rome curated by Giorgio Mangani, Francesco P. Di Teodoro, Ingrid Rowland, Vincenzo Farinella, Fabrizio Biferali and Paolo Clini.

The regional administration #regionemarche - in collaboration with ENIT – the National Tourism Agency and Aerdorica Airport of Le Marche and with the support of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage Activities and Tourism – realized Raphael An impossible exhibition, designed and curated by Renato Parascandolo. The exhibition has already been very successful with over 40,000 peoples who visited the first stop of the exhibition at the Marche Airport in Falconara Marittima (AN). In 2020 the project will be touring Italy Europe and beyond: from February to December the exhibition will be in Bruxelles, Paris, Ekaterinburg, Moscow, Sofia, Munich, Frankfurt, and Vienna. Presenting 45 paintings by Raphael all together, including the fresco of the School of Athens, in life-size reproductions, this exhibition makes it possible to admire works scattered across 17 different countries, something which not even the artist himself managed to arrange during his lifetime.

2020 will also be the year of the Lauretano Jubilee on the occasion of the centenary of the proclamation of Our Lady of Loreto as universal patroness of aeronauts, which took place on March 24, 1920. The Jubilee began on December 8th, 2019, with the opening of the Holy Door in the Sanctuary of Loreto presided by His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State, and the exhibition will end on 10th December 2020.

Le Marche, which has always been the "gateway to the East" of Italy, is the only Italian region named "in the plural", perhaps because it is characterized by the presence of the Apennine mountains on one side, which gently slope down parallel valleys to the sea on the other. A diverse territory, full of traditions, culture, know how and passion that will present a wealth of initiatives in 2020, to allow every tourist to discover its magic through different experiences.

Starting from Nature reserves and marine parks – such as the natural marvel that is the Frasassi Caves, the Riviera delle Palme, the baia del Conero and Pesaro – with its “Itinerari della bellezza”, “Beauty Itineraries” - passing through the story of illustrious characters who were born and lived in the region, such as Raphael and the renowned Maria Montessori, the scientist of children who celebrates her 150th anniversary this year.

And still a lot of creativity with the Marche Cinema Cluster and 15 new film productions at the start in Le Marche and then art and culture with the exhibitions La Regione delle madri. I paesaggi di Osvaldo Licini in Monte Vidon Corrado and Sguardi di Novecento. Giacomelli e il suo tempo in Senigallia, celebrating the international photographic master on the twentieth anniversary of his death.

Le Marche is also well known for its excellent #food and wine tradition. Products such as the prosciutto di Carpegna (ham), the moscioli of Conero bay (mussels), the tartufo di Acqualagna (truffles) and home to star chefs as Mauro Uliassi, with three Michelin stars and Moreno Cedroni, with two stars, both working in Senigallia which happens to have been nominated Italian city of 2019 by Il Gambero Rosso.

The Best in Travel guide 2020 by Lonely Planet has this to say about Le Marche Region: “One of the reasons behind its charm is the opportunity to visit in peace, without being surrounded by big crowds of tourists, among the most impressive Roman ruins, imposing gothic architectures, majestic medieval castles, noble palaces from the Renaissance that preserve the finest Italian art collections. All of these treasures are surrounded by the beauty of the landscape; by the massive woody mountains and the mild Adriatic coast enriched by the tempting #food festivals.”

There are so many reasons to visit Le Marche.
