Alessi at HOMI 2015

Alessi presents a large collection of new products for the AdiAlessi, #alessi and Officina #alessi brands. These products encompass various areas of the domestic landscape: the dining table accessories, kitchen and wine accessories, small gift items, Christmas decorations and lighting solutions. The seasonal collections, presented twice a year to the international market, are valuable products that seek to capture the spirit of the contemporary #design world: “Instruments conceived – explains Alberto Alessi, chairman of #alessi SpA - by our network, about 400 people including architects, designers and a few artists.

This network is one of Alessi’s most vital assets, making it an industry unlike any other, and we dedicate great amounts of energy to taking care of it, maintaining it. It is a virtual entity, bringing together independent designers of all ages who live in all corners of the world.” The new products in the Autumn/Winter 2015 collection include a number of stainless steel objects produced at the Crusinallo factory, including the “Le cerchie” tray by Michele De Lucchi, the “Cha” creamer and sugar bowl by Naoto Fukasawa, the “Tea Rex” kettle by Michael Graves, the “Kaleidos” basket by Naoko Shintani, the “Bark” centrepiece by Michel Boucquillon and Donia Maaoui, the “Oliette” olive oil bottle holder by Marta Sansoni, the steel lids of the “Carmeta” biscuit box by Lluís Clotet and “Girotondo” by King-Kong, and the “Celata” basket and the “Noè” ice tub by Giulio Iacchetti. These products emphasise the company’s commitment to keeping the production of its core business in Italy: “we want to reiterate the importance of the mechanical workshop in the construction of our positive utopia.” With the “Pulcina” espresso coffee maker and the “Le cerchie” tray, Michele De Lucchi broadens the range of products he has designed for Alessi. The “Pulcina” espresso coffee maker is the result of a research project initiated by #alessi and illy 15 years ago with the aim of creating a “21st century coffee pot”.

The project sought to adapt the classic coffee pot in a way that would heighten the organoleptic properties of coffee. It is a revolutionary coffee pot that combines the technology developed by illycaffè in the field of thermofluid dynamics with Alessi’s #design experience.

To mark the 30th anniversary of his “9093” kettle with the singing bird whistle, one of the icons of 20th century design, Michael Graves envisaged its evolution by redesigning the whistle. The new design, completed before his death, saw the little bird transformed into “Tea Rex”, a jade green dragon that symbolises strength and fortune in Chinese culture. Alberto #alessi comments: “Michael was one of our #design heroes in the 80s and 90s. Renowned postmodernist architect par excellence, he was able to create best-selling items that were in tune with a wide audience, bringing to the world of European #design an uninhibited breath of fresh air.

I remember Sottsass, who upon seeing the prototype of the kettle said, with a mix of irony and admiration: “It takes a lot guts to #design something like that”.
