Thailand celebrates its National Day at Expo 2015

“Food security and sustainable development are at the top of Thailand’s national agenda”. With these words, Chavalit Chookajorn, Thai Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, opened the Country’s National Day at Expo Milano 2015. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn also took part in the celebrations.  The entire delegation was welcomed this morning by Maurizio Martina, Minister for Agricultural, Environmental and Forestry Policies and Bruno Antonio Pasquino, General Commissioner of Expo Milano 2015.

“Thailand - explained Chookajorn, during the flag-raising ceremony – applies King Bhumibol Adulyadej's philosophy of "sufficiency economy”, a doctrine that promotes moderation, reasonable thinking and caution, and which has become a source of inspiration for sustainability in all walks of life”. By 2030 the Country aims to produce 20% of its energy from renewable sources, so adding energy security to food security.

In his speech, Minister Martina, praised the educational motives of the Thai Pavilion on the themes of sustainability and innovation and underlined the strong commercial relations between Italy and Thailand: “I think that the liberalisation of the exchanges between the European Union and Asia could bring great benefits to our Countries, especially in our agri-food segment”, commented Minister Martina, referring to a market with 600 million people.

Finally, Minister Martina talked about the importance of the battle against hunger, the issue at the centre of the debate opened by the Universal Exposition: “The ‘Zero Hunger 2030’ goal – he explained – must be reached with the strong commitment of the international community and our two Countries”.

The celebrations continued with a show based on the theme “Culture of the land and sea” and a demonstration of Thai Boxe with champion Buakaw Banchamek.

Princess of Thailand Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, who headed the delegation, then visited Palazzo Italia, where the Thai Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives Chavalit Chookajorn signed the Charter of Milan.
